Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick return for the all-star sequel to the 2016 DreamWorks hit CG-animated musical, Trolls.
Queen Poppy (Kendrick) and Branch (Timberlake) discover that there are other Troll clans beyond their own with each devoted to a different genre of music: funk, country, techno, classical, pop and rock. But when a mysterious threat puts all Trolls in danger, Poppy and Branch must unite everyone in order to save the day.
All these worthy if slightly mixed messages though, are somewhat undermined by some insipid, uninspired stereotypes representing the other musical tribes and a central premise that essentially cobbles together bits from Avengers: Infinity War, Frozen 2 and Rise of Skywalker.

It’s hard to imagine a juvenile audience working up much steam about pop’s appropriation of musical genres, but there’s no denying the fine vocal contributions from the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Anderson Paak, and Gustavo Dudamel.

Yes, this candy-colored jukebox musical sequel to the 2016 installment stuffs a ridiculous playlist into silly and psychedelic gags about hairy forest critters who thrive on joy and good tunes. And yes, it will mainly appeal to kids and stoners for those reasons alone.

It is aggressive in its assault on the kiddie senses. Of course, no one comes to a non-stop movie like this for subtlety, but you also don’t necessarily expect to feel you like you dunked your head in a bucket of Skittles either.
