The NeverEnding Story
While hiding from school bullies, young Bastian (Barret Oliver) discovers the land of Fantasia within the pages of a magical book in this family fantasy from director Wolfgang Petersen (his rather surprising follow-up to WWII submarine drama Das Boot). Based on the novel by German author Michael Ende.
The book found by Bastian tells the tale of Atreyu, a young warrior who, with the help of a dragon named Falkor, must save Fantasia from the destruction of "The Nothing" - a void of darkness that consumes everything.
Made in Germany, The NeverEnding Story was the most expensive movie ever made outside the USA or USSR at the time. The film was disowned by Ende, who claims it deviated far from his source material.

The NeverEnding Story / Reviews

Roger Ebert
The world of this movie looks like a very particular place, and the art direction involved a lot of imagination.

Empire Magazine
This was sweet and charming at the time but now it just lacks either the comedy or sophistication of kids' fantasy film that we've all become accustomed to.
