The Lodge

The Lodge

COMING SOON TO CINEMAS 2019
The Lodge

In this horror-drama, from the directors of chiller Goodnight Mommy, two siblings are snowed in with their new stepmother-to-be, Grace (Riley Keogh). Loyal to their mother, the kids try to explore Grace's troubled past and this tense atmosphere gives way to terror when strange and frightening events occur.

"An unblinking study of human frailty, The Lodge offers a haunting exploration of the traumatic aftershocks of religious devotion while positing that some evils just don’t die. Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala build an overwhelming disquiet from this visceral and stylish film’s very first scene, before nestling their claustrophobic thriller within a disorientingly endless snow-filled landscape. Riley Keough exudes fragility as well-meaning Grace’s every good intention leads her deeper back toward the hell of her own past, while Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh do impressive work as the kids’ practiced defiance turns to fear." As a psychological down-is-up horror movie, The Lodge has a few solid tricks up its sleeve. But when the smoke and mirrors clear, it's ultimately a story about trauma, and a rather bleak one at that.

English-language "The Lodge" is atmospheric and intriguing enough to appeal to more adventurous viewers.

This film will unsettle you in the moment and leave you thinking about the repercussions of grief, violence, blind faith and manipulation long after the credits roll.

While the filmmakers' control of mood, menacing atmosphere and unsettling spatial dynamics remains arresting, their story sense grows shaky in a chiller that starts out strong but becomes meandering and repetitive.

With the chilly setting, how the camera moves through the home, and how inner demons threaten to consume a family, it's reminiscent of The Shining. It's a relentless, mind-bending nightmare in which the threat of demons from one's past are always lurking.
