The Last Tycoon (Da Shang Hai)

Chow Yun-Fat and Sammo Hung star in this Shanghai gangster epic set in the early 20th century, based on the true misadventures of infamous Triad mobster Du Yuesheng. From veteran Hong Kong director Jing Wong.

Wrongly facing a jail sentence, Cheng (Yun-Fat) is pried away from both the life he knew and Qiu, the woman he loved. After escaping prison, he makes his way through the criminal syndicates to becoming one of the most powerful mob bosses in Shanghai. But Cheng’s infamy plays against him when he is wedged between the Japanese army and the local secret service. The mounting pressure is made all the more unbearable when he is reacquainted with his former love Qiu, and her new husband.

Movie of the Year - so far! (okay, it's only January)

There has been a spate of Chinese war epics over the last two years, but none of them are quite like "The Last Tycoon" (no, Scott-Fitzgerald it ain't!). Sumptuous visuals, solid acting, dynamic direction, complex plot yet easy to follow (and it's in Mandarin)... What more could you want? I've only just seen this film a few short hours ago and I'm still...

A surprisingly enjoyable and retro period actioner that will be carried along by its star power.
