The Hedgehog

French comedy-drama about Paloma – a serious, but deeply bored 11-year-old who has decided to kill herself on her twelfth birthday. Fascinated by art and philosophy, she questions and documents her life, drawing and video taping observations on the world around her. But as her appointment with death approaches, Paloma meets some kindred spirits in her building's grumpy concierge (Josiane Balasko), and an enigmatic, elegant neighbour (Togo Igawa), both of whom inspire Paloma to question her rather pessimistic outlook on life.

Adapted from the best-seller The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by French novelist and philospher Muriel Barbery.

The Hedgehog is an odd curio of a film - you may actually find yourself more moved than you anticipated as it nears its end.

Although the conceit of an ever-so-erudite child palling around with an exceedingly wise concierge might be workable in a novel, cinema tends to realism, and Achache is too much of a novice to bring it off.
