There’s a great movie inside of The Half of It, and Wu is a tremendous talent who shouldn’t have to wait 15 years to make another feature film. Like too many Netflix movies, this one feels like the script needed a few more drafts.

The plot mechanics of The Half of It creak a little; once in a while, a scene raises more questions than it answers. But the movie is so vital that that doesn’t matter much, and its young actors hit every delicate beat perfectly.

A strong, warm-hearted and quietly progressive addition to the expanding Netflix teen movie pack which treats its target audience with the respect they deserve.

There’s an earnest emotional maturity that carries the film along as it builds to an ending that’s cathartic without being simplistic.

Wu’s unique take on teen angst hints at what else we’ve been missing by allowing studios to limit who can tell such stories. If the genre seems played out, or else rife with clichés, it’s a direct result of such exclusion.

It’s no wonder the film so effortlessly folds highbrow aims into an accessible coming of age story — writer/director Alice Wu knows her stuff.

Starts off as story of brainy student helping a jock woo their mutual object of affection— and then makes a wonderfully unexpected left turn
