Empty cynicism isn’t a substitute for well-reasoned critique, and Roth winds up looking more clueless than the so-called “social justice warriors” he’s trying to satirize.
Full reviewCannibalistic horror from Eli Roth (Hostel), filmed on location in the rainforest of Peru where the native tribe has never been filmed before. The story follows a group of American students who travel to the Amazon in hopes of saving the tribe, only to be taken hostage…
Roth enlisted a real Peruvian tribe as the film's principle cast (apart from the American students). Roth has said the tribe not only had no acting experience, but weren't even aware of what a movie is.
Says Roth: "We went in the Amazon deeper than anyone has ever shot a movie before. I went so far up the river, we went to a village where they had no electricity, no running water, and they never before had seen a movie or television... We had to explain to them conceptually what a movie was, and we brought a television and a generator and we showed them Cannibal Holocaust [the infamous 1980 cannibal horror]. They thought it was the funniest thing that they had ever seen, but we had to know whether they were down with it to let us in their village."

Full reviewNo one could accuse Roth of lacking guts – even if he hasn’t found the perfect recipe for them.
Full reviewIzzo is a fine genre actress, standing out from a cast of blonde women with her naturalistic performance and signs of courage and initiative.
Full reviewLess a riff on spaghetti splatter flicks like Cannibal Holocaust than a desperate-to-shock pastiche of guts and gore served with a wink to audiences with strong stomachs. You know who you are.
