The Craft: Legacy

The Craft: Legacy

Blumhouse Productions brings the 1996 pop-culture classic to 2020. This stand-alone sequel follows a new cast of teenagers (Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, and Zoey Luna) navigating the perils of high school and the dangers of witchcraft. David Duchovny and Michelle Monaghan also appear.

With an emphasis on inclusion, and a desire to reflect the issues contemporary teenagers face, director  Zoe Lister-Jones has stressed the importance of "a story that centres around young people, young women specifically, coming into their power in today’s current climate".

This more PG and PC version (although it deserves brownie points for its frank depictions of certain rites of passage) telegraphs its twists, borrows Marvel’s “with great power comes great responsibility” message and loses some of the original’s edge by slowly devolving into a kind of Riverdale-meets-Blumhouse’s Black Christmas.

These are confident, independent young women even before they harness the mysteries of the occult, which makes for a gentler, more carefree take on the material.

Aside from composer Heather Christian's cool techno theme on the end credits - which is far more memorable than the timid scoring throughout - Legacy left me less than spellbound.

A smart, edgy, wickedly funny and wild ride from the talented writer-director Zoe Lister-Jones...

Zoe Lister-Jones' new take on the 1996 cult classic misses why the original works.

Looking to cast a spell of its own, The Craft: Legacy tries some new tricks. It's just a shame that for all the worthwhile additions, it's sometimes more toil than bubble.

A frustrating franchise-forward choice aside, this sequel is wickedly fun and bewitching.
