Review: My Cousin Rachel
See Hitchcock's Rebecca insteadI really wanted to love this. Great reviews abound. But sadly this version of a truly wonderful book just missed the mark. The pacing was not quite right and the cinema photographer clearly thought that pulling focus would add more excitement. It didn't. The scenery was gorgeous as was the costuming. Rachel Weiss was only okay.
The sister novel 'Rebecca' made into a movie by Hitchcock in 1940 beats this flick hands down with a truly sinister villainess and her cohort Mrs Danvers. Daphne Du Maurier thrillers are the best, this film does not do her extraordinary novel justice.
