A winner at both Berlin and Toronto International Film Festivals, this French-Canadian drama from filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049) centres on an unhappy young woman in the fashion industry who accidentally runs over a jaywalker one night. Uncertain of the man's fate, the events that follow force her to come to terms with her life.

A piquant contemporary fable that mixes elements whimsical, macabre and romantic to determinedly offbeat effect. Whether there's much substance beneath all the surface eccentricity may be the largest among many puzzles here. Nonetheless, "Maelstrom" is always texturally striking and tonally intriguing.
