Le Cercle Rouge

Le Cercle Rouge

Classic French crime film from 1970, directed by Jean-Pierre Melville, perhaps best known for its final heist sequence which is about half an hour in length.

Master thief Corey (Delon) is fresh out of prison. But instead of toeing the line of law-abiding freedom, he finds himself back in the shadowy world of crime, crossing paths with a notorious escapee (Gian Maria Volonté) and alcoholic ex-cop (Montand). As the unlikely trio plot a heist against impossible odds, they are pursued by a relentless inspector (Bourvil), and fate seals their destinies.

Melville's special achievement was to relocate the American gangster film in France, and to incorporate his own steely poetic and philosophical obsessions.

One can still savour Melville's leisurely storytelling, the skilfully pared-down visual style, and the calmly understated central performances.
