The cheeky comic tone keeps things buoyant - as does Chris Pratt's winning performance as the most blissfully spaced-out space crusader this side of Buckaroo Banzai.
Full reviewMarvel's deep space superhero team get a film adaptation. Space adventurer, and self-proclaimed "legendary outlaw", Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is the object of a bounty hunt after stealing an orb coveted by a treacherous villain. Pursued not only by bounty hunters but a green-skinned assassin as well as the space pirates he double-crossed to pull off the heist, Quill has to assemble a diverse alien team from among his pursuers in order to first survive, and then to prevent destruction on a planetary scale.
The resulting team of misfits is made up of Gamora (Zoe Saldana, Avatar), the powerful Drax (wrestler Dave Bautista); Rocket - a talking raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper); and Groot - a tree-creature (voiced by Vin Diesel) who also talks, but with a much more limited vocabulary. From the director of Slither and Super. Also features Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, John C. Reilly, and Djimon Hounson.

Full reviewIt’s set far, far away, but Gunn keeps finding ways to keep it grounded in the known universe.
Full reviewDespite occasional disregard for the laws of physics, much of the imagery displayed onscreen is so realistic and thrill-inducing that sometimes even the plot becomes almost secondary.
Full reviewColourful, tongue-in-cheek fun, purpose-built for grown-up lovers of kitsch ’80s science-fiction. But the Marvel formula is starting to feel, well, a little too formulaic.
