Freaky | Ratings & Reviews

"Freaky keeps the slasher aspect and the laughs, and fuses them to another cinematic framework, the body-swap film (specifically Freaky Friday, hence the title). It announces itself with a portentous stab of music and words written across the screen in blood: ‘Wednesday the 11th’, going on to specifically homage Jason Vorhees and the Halloween series. In keeping with this, Landon has made the jump to an R rating, which means the gore has gone up several notches from the more family-friendly Death Days. The first few kills, in particular, are real doozies."

FlicksFlicks

"Chalk it up to an abundance of imagination, but Freaky may just be too clever to be all that much fun."

Hollywood ReporterHollywood Reporter

"Even when Freaky doesn't live up to its full potential, there's still something oddly satisfying about unmasking a slasher movie to reveal the '80s comedy lurking underneath"

A.V. ClubA.V. Club

"It's the best, and most inventive, slasher movie since Scream"

Slash FilmSlash Film

"Has a lighthearted tone and a bouncy energy that keeps it watchable, even though writer-director Christopher Landon and his co-writer, Michael Kennedy, don't do as much as they should have with a killer idea."

Los Angeles TimesLos Angeles Times

"It's just a rare joy to see a film-maker scrambling together overused tropes and making something so vibrant and vital as a result, an exciting and unexpected studio movie with a brain, some guts and a heart."

The GuardianThe Guardian

"Freaky is a bloody good time. It's smart, sharp and funny with some tasty kills and headline casting that is to die for."

IGNIGN

"Freaky is a love letter to slashers and teen movies, but it's also a comforting cinematic hug dripping in blood."

Bloody DisgustingBloody Disgusting

""Freaky" doesn't skimp on the meat and potatoes of any good body-swap movie: having a ton of fun watching two different people awkwardly slip into their new corporeal figures (and lives)."
