Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Family fantasy musical co-scripted by Roald Dahl, based on Bond author Ian Fleming's sole children's book. Dick Van Dyke is Caractacus Potts, an eccentric inventor and peculiar parent of two young kids, who finally finds success with a flying car in 1910s England. But when a foreign government resorts to skullduggery to get their hands on it, Potts - along with his children and his upper-class love interest Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes) - find themselves in danger. The songs are by the Sherman Brothers, the team behind the famous tunes of Mary Poppins and The Jungle Book.

Howes goes through the romantic motions with Van Dyke and the maternal ones with the kids, but there is no real sentiment between players.

Nauseatingly cute... the special effects are shoddy, the songs instantly forgettable, and the leisurely length an exquisite torture.

A fast, dense, friendly children's musical, with something of the joys of singing together on a team bus on the way to a game.

The film is too long at well over two hours, but the effects are impressive for the time and the musical numbers zippy.
