Barry Lyndon

Barry Lyndon

Barry Lyndon

18th century period piece from legendary filmmaker Stanley Kubrick following the rise and fall of Irish farm boy Redmond Barry (Ryan O'Neal). Traversing the battlefields of Europe, his journey is filled with deadly engagements, wreckless abandonment and fleeting romances as he ultimately seeks a place in the British aristrocracy.

Kubrick originally wanted to adapt William Makepeace Thackeray's most famous novel Vanity Fair. However, he felt he couldn't do it justice within the confines of three hours. So he settled for The Memoirs of Barry Lyndon, Esq. instead.

Ryan O'Neal's excellent performance captures the shallow opportunism endemic to the title character who is brought down as much by his own flaws as by the mores of the ordered social structure of 18th-century England.

It's a work of technical brilliance and considerable beauty; the slow and deliberate pacing only serves to make Barry's adventures more fascinating.

It's not a great entertainment, but it's a great example of directorial vision: Kubrick saying he's going to make this material function as an illustration of the way he sees the world.

Meticulous and philosophically stimulating but it can leave some audiences unmoved on an emotional level
