All Good Things

All Good Things

(2010)

Murder mystery drama inspired by the live of Robert Durst - the black sheep of a wealthy New York real estate dynasty accused of multiple murders. Stars Ryan Gosling, Kirsten Dunst and Frank Langella.... More

Durst is suspected (but never tried) of killing his wife - who disappeared never to be found in 1982 - and later his friend who was supposedly about to lift the lid on Durst's secrets. Then in 2001, when Durst was hiding in Texas (pretending to be a mute woman), he was arrested for the murder of his neighbour Morris Black. Black's dismembered body was found in pieces in Galveston Bay. Durst pleaded self defence and was acquitted of murder.

Produced and directed by Andrew Jarecki (director of the Academy Award-nominated doc Capturing the Friedmans and producer of Catfish). Jarecki would revisit Durst in the explosive 6-part HBO documentary series, The Jinx (2015).Hide

  • Kirsten Dunst is so good here as a woman at a loss to understand who her husband really is, and what the true nature of his family involves. Full Review

  • Gosling is given the barest blueprint of a life gone terribly wrong and the actor struggles to make something out of nothing, though he does manage to give the older David an aura of weirdness that is downright creepy. Full Review

  • This feverishly creepy but dramatically miscalculated picture reps an unhappy marriage of murky psychodrama and dubious theorizing. Full Review

  • It's a juicy story, though that doesn't excuse Jarecki from fixating above all else on the tabloid-ready twists and pop-psychological turns of Durst's story. Full Review
