Director Oliver Stone charts the incredible life of Alexander the Great in this true story of history’s most visionary military leader. By the age of 25, around 300 BC, Alexander (Colin Farrell) ruled 90% of the known world, driven by a mixture of supreme talent and ambition. But Alexander’s desire to extend the reaches of his enormous empire, often at the expense of his relationships to those close to him, proved fatal as he continued to explore mysterious new lands. More
Stone sheds light on Alexander’s upbringing as the heir to Macedonian king Philip II (Val Kilmer). Raised by his mother Olympias (Angelina Jolie), determined to put her son on the throne at any cost, Alexander enjoyed the benefits of Macedonian nobility, learning from the great Ptolemy (played by both Anthony Hopkins and Elliot Cowan) and Aristotle (Christopher Plummer). Ascending to the throne, Alexander waged wars of increasing scale, battling the Persian Empire and mounting an eight-year campaign across Asia seeking to reach the ends of the world, but only ushering him to an early demise. As well as Alexander’s military campaigns, Stone depicts Alexander’s relationships with his wife Roxana (Rosario Dawson) and his childhood friend Hephaestion (Jared Leto), controversially hinting at a romantic relationship with the latter.Less
