Young at Heart is the only nationwide film festival in Australia with a program dedicated to viewers age 60 and up. They don’t check IDs at the door, do they?
We ask because this year’s line-up is particularly impressive, with films audiences of any age will be hankering to see. Presented by Palace Cinemas, 16 titles will screen across eleven venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide from April 2 to April 25.
The program includes the Australian premiere of Last Flag Flying, the latest film from Oscar-nominated director Richard Linklater (Boyhood, Bernie, Dazed and Confused). It’s got a hell of a cast. Steve Carrell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne play three aging Vietnam War veterans who reunite after many years apart.
Young at Heart will also feature the Australian premiere of LBJ, starring Woody Harrelson as Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Australian premiere of Chappaquiddick, which explores the first few hours following the infamous 1969 incident when Senator Ted Kennedy accidentally drove off a bridge.
There’s also the documentary Gurrumul (about the life and career of the late, world-famous Indigenous Australian musician) and a small assortment of classic films. These include 1954’s A Star is Born (starring Judy Garland) and 1950’s All About Eve (starring Bette Davis).
All in all, a pretty damn good program.
