Advanced screenings of Breath playing throughout April, with Simon Baker Q&As

Breath, the feature film directorial debut of actor Simon Baker, is one of the most highly anticipated Australian films of the year. Ahead of its national release on May 3, there will be preview screenings of the film – with Baker in attendance for Q&As – across the country during the second half of April.

These screenings will take place in Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia, following Breath‘s Australian premiere at the Gold Coast Film Festival on April 19.

The film is an adaptation of a best-selling novel by Tim Winton, set in coastal Western Australia in the mid-70s. Baker plays a mysterious surfer and adventurer, who becomes a mentor for a pair of younger surfers, giving them advice and leadership that changes the courses of their lives.

Breath premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, and has been greeted with positive reviews.

Dennis Harvey from Variety described it as a drama with “authenticity and resonance,” and a “multi-planed rite-of-passage tale that reaches a satisfyingly poignant and quiet conclusion.”

David Rooney at The Hollywood Reporter said it is “a rewarding coming-of-age drama that features terrific performances from two young newcomers in the central roles.” Sarah Ward from ScreenDaily agreed, saying it is “an affectionate portrayal of boyhood in 1970s Australia.”
