A music-filled tribute to Havana’s glorious history, by veteran rock filmmaker Julien Temple (The Great Rock ’n’ Roll Swindle).
"Havana – renowned for its faded glamour, colonial architecture, and finned cars – has endured slavery, dictatorship, revolution and mass emigration. Now, with US sanctions relaxing, it’s on the brink of a tourism and gentrification bonanza. The habaneros (or people of Havana) have seen it all, and in Temple’s comprehensive documentary we follow the story of their community. Astonishing and rare archival footage of the Castro years is deftly blended with animations, movie excerpts and interviews with experts on, and witnesses to, Havana’s changing ways. Of course, given it’s a Julien Temple film, music also plays a big role, with salsa, jazz, rumba, mambo and hip hop threaded throughout this exuberant city portrait." (Sydney Film Festival)
