Trailers of the week: Kardashian horror story, new Adventure Time, and more

We get bombarded with teasers, trailers and promotional clips relentlessly – each weekend Steve Newall sorts through the best of the week for you to check out and get excited about.

American Horror Story: Delicate

Ryan Murphy’s no longer AHS showrunner, but incoming Halley Feiffer isn’t slacking in the casting department, assembling Emma Roberts, Cara Delevingne and Kim Kardashian for this new season. The teaser hints at some culty maternal horror, maybe weaving a bit of Rosemary’s Baby into proceedings?

Gran Turismo

More video game flourishes are present in this new trailer for Neill Blomkamp’s bizarre mix of game adaptation and true story. This is really a case of having your cake and eating it too as he brings to the screen a movie named after the video game that its main character plays so well he becomes a real-life race driver. Did I mention it’s a true story?!

Kalki 2898 – AD

Arguably the biggest thing out of San Diego Comic-Con so far is this Indian Telugu sci-fi action epic, boasting a budget of US$75 million, making it one of the most expensive Indian movies ever made. Written and directed by Nag Ashwin (Mahanati) this looks to have more than a touch of Dune among its influences, and intriguingly follows a modern-day embodiment of the Hindu god Vishnu in a chaotic distant future.

The Creator

There’s plenty more action in the new trailer for Gareth Edwards’ sci-fi pic The Creator—and not a lot in additional spoilers from the previous one (if that’s a concern). The film’s set in the near-future, during a war between mankind and AI, with John David Washington tasked with a mission to hunt down a doomsday weapon that could end the war—only to find it takes the form of a child.

Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake

Fionna and Cake—alternate universe versions of Finn and Jake—take centre stage in this new 10-episode Adventure Time spin-off. On what’s billed as a multiverse-hopping journey towards self-discovery, the pair seek the help of former Ice King Simon Petrikov as a new enemy determined to erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.

The Marvels

A new trailer for this MCU pic offers up a little more of the movie’s villain, Kree warrior Dar-Benn, played by Zawe Ashton (Velvet Buzzsaw). They square off against Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), whose powers have become entangled—every time one of the trio uses them, they swap places with the others, meaning heightened cooperation will be needed.

The Holdovers

Paul Giamatti reteams with Sideways director Alexander Payne for this comedy-drama set at a New England prep school. The institution clears out over Christmas, with the exception of Giamatti’s curmudgeonly teacher, tasked with looking after the few students who have nowhere to go—aka the “holdovers”.

All Up in the Biz

Late, great rapper Biz Markie gets a documentary looking back at his life, career and impact on music. Perhaps best known for his hit Just a Friend, playful approach to hip hop, and appearing on a number of Beastie Boys albums, Markie left an indelible mark on pop culture that’ll be great to explore here.

A Haunting in Venice

Kenneth Branagh’s Hercule Poirot returns in this horror-tinged mystery based on Agatha Christie’s novel Hallowe’en Party. Poirot finds himself mixed up in a séance that (of course) leads to a murder he, once again must solve. Haunting‘s ensemble cast includes Michelle Yeoh, Tina Fey, Jamie Dornan, Camille Cottin and Kelly Reilly.

Haunted Mansion

The Disney ride comes back to haunt screens again (after the 2003 Eddie Murphy version), that sees a single mother (Rosario Dawson) and her son move into a mansion… that’s haunted. To exorcise the spirits, they assemble a team of paranormal experts, including LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, and Danny DeVito. Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Winona Ryder and Jared Leto also appear.
