Top Picks: TV
Miracle Workers: End Times (July 11)
The brilliant anthology comedy is back for another series. This time its characters are post-apocalyptic warlords and warriors facing a whole new challenge: suburban life. Starring Daniel Radcliffe who was born to be weird, and one of Australia’s finest comedic talents, Geraldine Viswanathan, Miracle Workers is truly an imaginative, hilarious series.
Minx: Season 2 (July 21)
Sometimes, good things can happen. Well, a nice thing after a bad thing, but I digress. After its untimely cancellation last year (after production had already completed season two) Minx season two has been saved for our viewing pleasure. The exciting intersection of feminism and erotica, Minx is full of heart and Jake Johnson in all his hairy-chested 70s sleaze glory. Enough said!
Twisted Metal (July 27)
Starring Anthony Mackie and Stephanie Beatriz, Twisted Metal is a new high-octane series based on the classic video game of the same name. Drenched in an old school neon aesthetic, this wasteland is not without its zany villains (including a clown that could give the Joker a run for his money), twists, and punches.
Top Picks: Movies + Specials
The Daughter (June 7)
I first saw this film at MIFF many years ago and it always left an impression on me. This is mainly due to the stunning visuals courtesy of the film’s director of photography, Andrew Commis. Having since gone on to do cinematography for Girl Asleep, Babyteeth and High Ground, he has firmly cemented himself as one of my favourite Australian cinematographers. His atmospheric work in the upcoming Force of Nature: The Dry 2, makes The Daughter a compelling companion film.
Spring Breakers (June 13)
From the indelible images of fluoro coloured bikinis and ski masks, the tinkle of Britney Spears on a poolside piano, to the shock of Disney darlings shaking off their squeaky-clean images, this propulsive MTV-aesthetic caper is one of many precursors to the teens-gone-wild of Euphoria. A hypebeast fever dream of 2010s sensationalism, Spring Breakers still leaves audiences in shock and awe.
House of Gucci (June 16)
Mamma mia! This 2021 crime drama stars songstress Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggani, an outsider who marries into the Gucci family. Based on the real life of the famed fashion family, Gaga impressed with her acting ability in the star vehicle A Star is Born, so it’s worth a look in, if you haven’t had a chance to yet!
